There is an abundance of treatment options that are available for people who struggle with anxiety. There are resources available online that can help provide insight into where and how a person with anxiety can get the help they need and start to better understand their condition.

Patients suffering from chronic and severe anxiety often require a comprehensive and detailed assessment to determine the severity of their condition and from there, can determine proper treatment procedures to follow. In many cases, anxiety treatment will include the use of medication or therapy or some combination of the two.

Medication

There are several medications that are utilized to help people who are struggling with an anxiety disorder and struggle to carry through with their day to day lives. These medications help to reduce the occurrence of anxiety symptoms and help to correct some physiological imbalances that can occur as the result of anxiety disorders. Anxiety medications, normally referred to as anti-anxiety medications, should only be used under the supervision of a doctor and any and all side effects that one may be experiencing from using them should be reported to ensure that the individual can make the appropriate adjustments.

Therapy

While anti-anxiety medications do serve as a valuable tool to help some of the physiological imbalance that are caused by chronic and severe anxiety, it is best utilized when used in conjunction with proper therapy to help patients take care of  both the physiological and psychological sides of their anxiety. This helps them receive a comprehensive treatment for their condition. There are several different types of therapy that can help someone deal with an anxiety disorder including the following:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): This form of therapy examines the roots of all behaviors exhibited by the patient and helps them gain more insight into their actions. It analyzes the thoughts and views that a person has that contributes to their anxiety along with the behaviors and reactions they exhibit when dealing with their anxiety. During this therapy, the therapist and the patient will work together to learn effective methods of how to solve these deep-rooted problems at their source. The therapist may assign the patient some work to do on their own from time to time help practice these principles that they have learned in therapy in their day to day life
  • Exposure therapy: This is a CBT technique that can be useful in dealing with anxiety disorders, especially issues such as PTSD and specific phobias. The goal of exposure therapy is to either help the patient face and find control of their fear caused by previous trauma or to help the client learn how to bring about a relaxed state when in the presence of a trigger for a phobia and help them cope with their fear.
  • Family Therapy: It is recommended that the the patient not only receive counseling for their condition, but that their family also receives counseling to help them learn how to better help their loved one who is struggling anxiety as well as learn how to cope with their struggling family member. A therapist will often counsel both the patient and his or her family together in a session to gain a better perspective on how they interact with each other. From there, the therapists can help them collectively find more efficient way of communicating with each other and reduce the risk of possible triggers at home for the patient
  • Equine Therapy: This is a method of alternative therapywhere therapy horses are used to helping patients deal with their emotions. Horses are recognized as very intuitive animals and in these programs, patients will learn how to handle horses in a manner which promotes emotional stability and positive reinforcement. Patients can then learn more about their emotions through their physical interactions with the horses

Continuing Care

Treating chronic and severe anxiety is a lifelong journey that requires consistent attention. That is why finding support and continuing care are very important. Whether or not someone has gone through intensive treatment for their anxiety, they should make sure to find support for their condition. 12-step based programs serve as a valuable tool for support for people who struggle with anxiety. They provide a strong support network for the individual, encouragement and guidance on how they can better cope with their condition.

12-step programs provide further opportunities for support during and after rehabilitation for many with mental health difficulties. They provide guidance to help participants stay on the path of mental wellness and encourage them with they encounter hurdles. These are also valuable resources as 12-step support groups provide safe environments for individuals to discuss their mental health without worrying about judgment or societal pressures. Some 12-step groups for individuals with anxiety include Emotions Anonymous (EA) or  Recoveries Anonymous (RA).
