Contrary to popular belief, being born as a transgender is not a disorder in itself. But the social stigma associated with this form of gender expression disallows people to seek corrective measures for depression. Despite suffering from extreme pain and exhibiting recognizable symptoms of mental health disorder, transgender people refrain from obtaining help, believing it as a sign of weakness. The National Alliance on Mental Illness suggests that transgender people are prone to depression and anxiety as they are often seen by others as non-conforming to a natural or inherited identity and so are stigmatized.
